Tire Safety Tips for Winter Weather
Winter can be tough on your car, but Biggers Mazda is here to offer some helpful tire safety tips for winter. Cold weather conditions like snow, sleet, and ice can reduce your car’s ability to grip the road. Slick roads and low traction can lead to unexpected problems. This is particularly troublesome for summer tires, but can affect all-season tires as well.
The following tips will keep you and your passengers safe throughout the winter season.
Tire Pressure
Tire pressure affects your car’s braking and handling abilities, so it is a key factor to check frequently. Your vehicle’s manual will state the range for optimal tire pressure. Heat and cold throw off measurements, so it’s important to let your car rest before checking the tires. Even a quick mile drive could distort the numbers. Cold weather conditions can decrease the pressure inside your tires one pound per square inch for every 10-degree temperature drop, so it’s important to check frequently in the winter. If your car falls short, visit our service department for maintenance.
Check Your Tread
You should check your tires frequently to make sure the tread is at least 2/32 inches deep. It is important to check the entire circumference of the tire, since uneven tread can cause damage. If you don’t have a ruler, check your tread with a penny. Simply insert the penny into the tread and see if you can view the top of Lincoln’s head. If his head is completely covered, you are good to go. If his head peeks through at any point, your tires should be replaced.
Choosing Winter Tires
Winter tires are specially formulated to work optimally in cold, slick weather conditions. They have features like soft stud tread fibers that stay flexible in freezing weather, micro pore compounds to cut through water film, and superior traction. When you install winter tires, it’s important to install all four at once and do not mix tires. This ensures that they will work their best to protect you from the elements.
Driving Safely
While proper tire care is crucial, it is also important to drive safely and knowledgeably. In addition to following the tire safety tips for winter above, remember:
- Braking takes longer when snow, sleet, rain, and ice are on the road. Slow down and increase your stopping distance.
- Drive cautiously even if your vehicle has four-wheel drive. Whether your car has two-wheel or four-wheel drive, there is no braking advantage in the winter.
- Your owner’s manual will provide specific tips for keeping your vehicle safe in cold weather conditions, so be sure to consult it.
