Family sitting in the car

A road trip with the family can be tons of fun, but there’s also a lot of downtime that can quickly turn to boredom if you’re not prepared. So, how do you make sure that traveling with kids is a success? Try out a few of the most popular car games for kids. These tried-and-true games require no materials, just your imagination, and can provide hours of distraction while cruising down the highway. Which car game will become your new family favorite?

The Alphabet Game

Split your passengers into two teams. One team watches the right side of the road, while the other team takes the left side. Starting with the letter “A”, players scan the roads to find the letter in play. Kids will have a blast while scanning street signs, road markers, license plates, and more. Once the letter is found, move onto the next. The first team to run through A to Z wins the round.

Twenty Questions

This classic car game is great for kids of all ages. To start, one person is selected to think of an object: a cat, a bike, a book, or anything else. The rest of the car takes turns asking questions to uncover clues. However, all questions must be in yes-or-no format. After 20 questions are asked, everyone takes a guess. The person with the closest guess is the winner, and then they must come up with a new object to guess.

The Picnic Game

If you want to work on your skills while traveling with kids, then this popular car game will challenge your memory skills in a fun and new way. The first player kicks off the game with “A is for _____”. Fill in the blank with your choice of word that begins with an A, like apple or aquarium. The next person repeats the task with the letter B, but also repeats the first example: “A is for apple, B is for banana.” As the game progresses, the task becomes harder and harder! The winner is the one who recites the longest chain, but don’t be afraid to work as a team.
