The Mazda3: A Historical Glimpse of a “Great Little Car”
As the United States embraced the galaxy far, far away with Star Wars: Episode IV and families began gathering around the television to watch Happy Days and Little House on the Prairie, Mazda made its move in 1977 to release a “Great Little Car” that we now know and love as the Mazda3. Scooting into the limelight as a contemporary hatchback, the then Mazda GLC arrived as a front-engine, rear-drive snappy little econo-mobile with an affordable price tag of just $2,945.
From Small Beginnings Come Great Things
The GLC would see 35,383 models sold its first year, and so we welcomed a second-generation featuring a four-door sedan in 1981. The GLC became more refined by 1986 and rolled in featuring a new engine, longer wheelbase, and a new nameplate: Mazda 323. By 1987 a four-door station wagon model joined the family, but the really impressive news would arrive in 1988 as the all-wheel-drive, turbocharged 323 GTX made its debut.
News of increased performance and impressive features continued to woo drivers over the years as the Mazda 323 carried over into the Mazda Protege in the 1990’s, and from the Protege this classic model became what we now behold as the Mazda3. Climbing into its second generation in 2013 and continuing today, the 2013 Mazda3 rolls in powered by a 148 hp 2.0L 4-cylinder or a 167 hp 2.5L 4-cylinder, and is well noted for crisp handling, sleek style, and high fuel efficiency.
The highly anticipated third-generation for the Mazda3 looks to arrive in the shape of the 2014 Mazda3 sometime this fall here at Biggers Mazda. Sporting the infamous Kodo design and cruising along with a direct-injected 4-cylinder engine, this next-gen ride is loaded with modern technology features such as SMS text and the new i-Activsense safety system while offering class-leading fuel economy.
