Thirty engineers in partnership with universities are working with the Mazda rotary engine team to improve the rotary engine to meet or exceed those standards.

The idea about the 16X—a design that offers more torque and optimal fuel economy—is one possible resolution. It has also been proposed to have a small-displacement unit as a range-extender in an electric Mazda2 for optimal and cleaner efficiency than the previous engine. While these solutions are only possibilities and have yet to be pursued, they suggest ways for improvement that could be applied—making dreams for the engine a reality.
