Could the Mazda Rotary Engine be Making a Comeback?
The Mazda team has shown interest in reviving the outstanding performance rotary engine. It has been confirmed that a team is working on the engine, but it is still too early to know if a new vehicle would pair with the engine; this means rumors about the next Mazda RX-7 or Mazda RX-8 models have to be put aside until further notice.
Improving the Engine
The rotary engine, as great it may be for performance, does not meet strict emissions standards. It also does not provide optimal mpg range. Thirty engineers in partnership with universities are working with the Mazda rotary engine team to improve the rotary engine to meet or exceed those standards.
Last Rotary Engine
Conflicting issues with emissions standards and fuel economy for the rotary engine lead to its last appearance in June 2012 on the Mazda RX-8. Ever since the last Mazda RX-8 models, speculation and demand have surrounded the model. Masamichi Kogai, head of Mazda, has denied all rumors about the Mazda RX-7. Enthusiasts not only want the Mazda RX-8, but they are predicting a return after a hiatus despite Kogai’s denial. Demand has lead to offered solutions for the rotary engine. The idea about the 16X—a design that offers more torque and optimal fuel economy—is one possible resolution. It has also been proposed to have a small-displacement unit as a range-extender in an electric Mazda2 for optimal and cleaner efficiency than the previous engine. While these solutions are only possibilities and have yet to be pursued, they suggest ways for improvement that could be applied—making dreams for the engine a reality.
