Mazda’s New G-Vectoring Control Refines the Driving Experience

After years of “human-centric” research on how to mirror vehicular motion in a way that’s natural to the human body, Mazda has announced the development of Mazda G-Vectoring Control. G-Vectoring is a subtle technology that activates to automatically adjust the grip of the wheels to the road when the internal computer detects simultaneous steering and throttle input. G-Vectoring Control is the first advancement in an exciting suite of technologies that Mazda is developing to continually improve the driving experience, SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY Vehicle Dynamics.
The Heart of the Technology
Mazda G-Vectoring Control operates at the very highest level, and in fact, is sophisticated enough for drivers will often not be aware that is in use. It works like this: the on-board computer constantly analyzes the steering angle and how quickly the driver is adjusting it, takes input from the throttle, and then funnels all the data through an algorithm. Engine torque is then automatically reduced if necessary, which adds additional grip to any wheels that need it. G-Vectoring Control is able to sense as little as a tenth of one degree of steering angle, which adjusts cornering forces to 0.1 to 0.5 g—that’s less than the human body can even feel.
When Can You Feel It?
There are times when the effects of G-Vectoring Control are more obvious. When driving on wet roads at higher speeds or on turns with some outside banking, you’re much more likely to feel the technology kicking in to grip your tires to the road. It’s also more noticeable when driving in snow, where it even helps drivers stay on a straight course on slick, uneven surfaces. Mazda videos also show that passengers may be able to feel less “push” from g-forces, for a smoother riding experience.

Research and Development
Although it’s a “behind the scenes” technology, Mazda has poured almost ten years of research and engineering into G-Vectoring because of the company’s philosophy, “Hashiru Yorokobi.” This guiding principle centers on the joy customers experience from driving, so Mazda is interested in enhancements that make things more intuitive and fun. G-Vectoring may be hard to define for customers, but the overall effect of this and other advancements on the horizon is a higher-level driving experience.
