As more and more auto manufacturers work to reduce driver distraction while implementing new technology, one innovation is changing the game. Heads-up displays are fast becoming a common sight within vehicles, but most of them aren’t standard equipment. Fortunately, the 2014 Mazda3 S Touring and S Grand Touring at Biggers Mazda in Elgin both feature a unique HUD that drivers can use at no additional cost.

Introducing the Active Driving Heads-Up Display

One of the ways Mazda is changing the game is through the use of a pop-up HUD known as the Active Driving Display. This deployable heads-up display is situated above the dashboard, behind the steering wheel. However, the images themselves are actually projected out toward the front of the hood, about 5 degrees below the average driver’s viewing angle. That way, your eyes can stay on the road while still gathering important vehicle information. Here’s a list of what the Active Driving Display is able to show you safely and discreetly:

  • Vehicle speed
  • Speed set for cruise control
  • Simple versions of the next instructions from the available navigation system
  • Alerts from various safety features like lane departure warning, forward obstruction warning, or the Smart Brake system

With all of this information in one convenient location, you don’t need to go searching for it below the dashboard.

What About Infotainment?

Mazda decided to forego implementing media information into the Active Driving heads-up display because certain notifications like in-coming text messages, phone calls, or audio data could make for a very cluttered HUD. Especially with the amount of space already offered by the Active Driving Display. Mazda engineers decided to separate infotainment from the vehicle information that requires quick processing in order to drive safely and effectively.
