Should I Buy or Lease a Mazda?

There are quite a few differences when comparing CPO vs. used vehicles, and not many are sure of what those are. Technically both categories of vehicles fall under “used”, however there are important distinctions between used and certified pre-owned vehicles that drivers in the Schaumburg area will want to be aware of when in the market for their next car, truck, or SUV.

What to Know About Buying a Used Car

Used vehicles, like CPO vehicles, have been previously driven by other owners. Each model varies in terms of model year, mileage, and number of previous owners. Because of this, they come at a lower cost than new vehicles and certified pre-owned vehicles. It’s also common to find inventory of used vehicles under $10,000 for sale.

Though most will tell you to stay clear of a used model with 100,000 miles or more, the truth is, these models can last for hundreds of thousands of miles with proper maintenance. Even so, keep in mind:

  • Thoroughly inspect any used vehicle you’re considering and take it for a test drive before making an offer
  • Discuss any issues in terms of vehicle condition or performance that arise, to ensure the vehicle is fit for your needs and safe to drive
  • Some cars and SUVs can last more than 200,000 miles with proper care and maintenance

What to Know About Buying a CPO Car

Certified pre-owned vehicles are part of a CPO program that has certain requirements that must be met. These requirements generally include:

  • Model year is within five years of the current model year
  • Generally less than 80,000 miles, sometimes up to 100,000 miles
  • A multi-point inspection
  • Offered with extended warranties and/or limited powertrain warranties

Certified used cars are typically newer models with less mileage than a used model, but also a higher price than a used model. Though they tend to cost more than used, they are more affordable than new vehicles. If you’re looking for a high-end pre-owned model that can give you the newer, upgraded St Charles commute you want with a lower price tag, a certified pre-owned vehicle is the best option.
