There are many precautionary steps that you can take to properly prepare your vehicle for the upcoming cold weather, so let’s take a closer look at some of the things you can do to save yourself some money down the road.

Winter Specific Maintenance

Our helpful service department would like to remind you that it is especially important to get your oil changed in cold weather as thick, dirty oil won’t be able to lubricate your engine properly. Also check the mix of your antifreeze in your radiator; you want about 50/50 water and antifreeze for optimum results. Your tires are another important thing to check before winter sets in, making sure you have plenty of tread depth to garner proper traction when driving in ice and snow. You’ll want to have at least 2/32” of tread depth and 4/32” is recommended for areas with heavy snow and ice.

Replacing your wiper blades before winter is also a handy way to avoid trouble. In addition to wiping away rain and snow, your windshield will also be splattered by salt and road grime that can easily obstruct your view. Making sure that you have new wiper blades and a full supply of wiper fluid can go a long way towards keeping your view unobstructed in winter. You should also check battery posts and spark plug wires as these can corrode with exposure to salt and water. You’ll also want to make sure that your brake pads and rotors are in good shape before you have to test their performance in icy conditions.
