Building Your Very Own Mazda LeMons Racer
As a 24-hour, $500 vehicle endurance test, the LeMons Race is perfect for the do-it-yourself car enthusiast. These races take place all over the country and give everyday people an opportunity to build their own racecar and compete. As a general rule, the race has a spending limit on how much goes into the vehicle you’re entering. The following is a quick rundown of essentials to build your own winning LeMons racecar.
- Decent Set of Tires: With a treadwear rating of 190 or higher required for all LeMons participants, using an old, cheap set of tires probably won’t cut it. We suggest bringing six Falken Azenis RT-615K or Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 tires to the race weekend nearest you. The reason you’ll want to bring six is to rotate tires out as the race goes on, which will keep your lap time down.
- Good Brakes and Functional Kill Switch: Since brakes are a safety item, you might want to spend a bit more on them as there is no limit on safety spending. Also, take into account that these brakes must last an entire 24 hours, so spring for durable and aggressive pads if you have the money. A good kill switch will keep electrical power running without interruptions and will keep you in the race longer.
- FIA or SFI-Approved Harness and Seat: Having a harness with a quick release will be extremely helpful during driver swaps, and are fast to remove in the event of an accident. Latch-and-link belts aren’t necessarily bad, but they could slow you down. A purpose-built, one-piece competition bucket seat can cost upwards of $800. But unless you want a terrible, aching back at the end of the race, it’s absolutely worth it.
- Roll Cage: In the event of an accident, having a roll cage installed on your LeMons racecar could save you from fatal injury. A properly built roll cage could cost thousands of dollars, but for the safety-conscious, this is priority equipment.
