2016 MX-5 Miata News

We have 2016 MX-5 Miata news for you, not the least of which is that we will start taking preorders for the model starting around February. Now, if you haven’t been following our blog here at Biggers Mazda, and if you haven’t been following Miata news, you might not know why the 2016 MX-5 is such a big deal. Don’t worry, we’re here to tell you.
Changes for the Fourth Generation
Not only is this the 25th anniversary of the Miata, but it’s also the start of a brand new generation for one of the most iconic, affordable sports cars on the market. It would be impossible for us to boil down all of the changes to the vehicle in one convenient blog post, but we have some of our favorite updates for you:
It’s Lighter: We know! It’s hard to believe that a sporty little car like the Miata could get lighter, but new advances in high-strength steel and aluminum have made it possible to lighten the Miata while making it sturdier. Current estimates put the 2016 Miata at about 2,100 pounds.- It’s Longer: The wheelbase and the hood are both longer, bringing a muscle car look to the roadster. The trademark grille and headlights are back, but they have a lower placement to give the Miata a more aggressive feel.
- A New Engine: Under the hood is a brand new SkyActiv engine with a turbocharger—videos of the 2016 MX-5 indicate the distinctive whine of a turbocharger—but the only thing confirmed is a 155-hp four-cylinder.
- Six-Speed Manual Transmission: As a roadster, we would be sorely disappointed if the Miata came with anything less as standard. If you’re a fan of automatics, you can add one on.
- The Latest Technology: Two USB ports, a rotary shift, and a touchscreen infotainment system can all be found on the new MX-5.
2016 MX-5 Miata Release Date
The release date is still up in the air, but early-to-mid 2015 is the best estimate we have. With the model making a showing at the 2015 Chicago Auto Show and our taking preorders starting in February, we obviously hope the 2016 MX-5 Miata release date will be sooner rather than later.
Spy Shots
You might think that spy shots aren’t of much use at this stage of the game—after all, Mazda unveiled the vehicle already—but remember how we weren’t sure about that turbocharged engine? Reports from over a year ago indicate that spy videos of the 2016 Miata carried the whine of a turbocharger. We’ve still got our ears to the ground on this one, as we would love to hear that you can get an even more powerful Miata next year!
Auto Show News

The best way to stay up to date—aside from repeatedly checking our blog here—is to follow news from the auto shows. Mazda debuted the 25th anniversary edition of the Miata at the last New York Auto Show, but that was only for the 2015 model. Considering how big of a launch the 2016 is going to be, we wouldn’t be surprised if Mazda released a special edition to kick off the start of another 25 years.
And if you want to know which auto show to follow, the next big one is going to be right here in Chicago: the 2015 Chicago Auto Show.
