Winter is on its way, and it’s of paramount importance that you make sure that you and your vehicle are prepared for the slick, hazardous roads. Our team at Biggers Mazda has compiled this guide for crafting an effective winter car safety kit that will ensure you are safe on Elgin area roads this winter and beyond.

An Effective Winter Car Safety Kit

Winter weather is coming soon, and drivers will once again be dealing with icy, slick roads. Like anything else, it’s always good to be prepared. If your vehicle breaks down or leaves you stranded this winter, being prepared with the right equipment helps ensure your safety. Read our list of safety items for an effective winter emergency car tools kit. Items you should add to your emergency tool kit for your car include:

  • Common winter items: gloves, blanket, rain poncho, rags, boots, socks, a hat. Pack anything to keep you warm if you get stranded during a snowstorm.
  • Battery cables
  • Basic first-aid kit
  • Flat tire kit
  • Portable shovel
  • Items to help when stranded: flashlight, warning signaling cones, backup batteries, safety vest, and roadside triangles
  • Cell phone charger
  • Ice scraper
  • Camera

Long Road Trips This Winter? Bring These.

Many vehicles these days offer all wheel drive systems, like the excellent 2021 Mazda CX5. All wheel drive helps maintain traction on slippery roads, which makes some drivers more optimistic about taking longer trips in the winter time. If you plan on taking a cross-country or road trip this winter, make sure you bring the following items:

  • Long-lasting food and water: It’s always best to have some water and long-lasting food, especially on long trips. Granola, protein bars, and water can last in your vehicle for about six months before they need to be replaced.
  • Tow strap: This handy tool will be helpful if your Mazda vehicle gets stuck in a ditch and you need another vehicle to help pull you out. Refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual about the proper way of using a tow strap.
  • Fire extinguisher: It’s good to have one in the event of a small fire. Make sure the fire extinguisher you purchase is intended for automotive use.

If you’re unlucky enough to find yourself stranded off-road in inclement weather, it’s a good idea to stay inside of or as close to your vehicle as possible, as long as it’s safe to do so. Leaving your vehicle to go out on your own is nearly never a good idea. Typically, emergency responders will want you close to your vehicle so they can get you attention immediately after locating your crash site. Either way, until help arrives, you’ll be more prepared with your roadside winter emergency kit.
