Do You Know the Difference Between Gasoline, Kerosene, and Diesel?

At Biggers Mazda, we were curious if our customers knew the difference between gasoline, kerosene, and diesel so we asked our Facebook followers. Andrea Mattern replied with the succinct and tickling “Car, lantern, truck”. Like us on Facebook to add your reply, as we’d love to hear from you!

Andrea isn’t far off with her answer. To be more accurate, gasoline, kerosene, and diesel all begin as petroleum and are composed of hydrogen and carbon. The carbon atoms link together in chains, which vary in lengths. The primary difference between the three is their boiling points, and this is how they are separated from one another. When crude oil reaches the oil refinery it is distilled. The oil is heated and the chains are separated by heating them to their individual vaporization temperatures. Several chains are blended together to make gasoline, these chains all vaporize at temperatures lower than the boiling point of water. This is why gasoline evaporates quickly when you spill it. Kerosene is next, followed by diesel, which is the heaviest of the three.
